A teacher has probably experienced a confusing situation at some point. During a lesson, the classroom appears calm and orderly. Students nod, take notes, and occasionally answer questions correctly. When the teacher asks, “Do you understand?” almost all students respond, “Yes.”
However, when test results or assignments are reviewed, many students turn out not to have truly understood the material.
This phenomenon is not uncommon in education. Many teachers feel that they have explained the content clearly, while students also believe that they understand it. Unfortunately, understanding that appears on the surface does not always reflect genuine understanding. In education, this condition is known as the illusion of understanding.
The illusion of understanding occurs when someone believes they understand a concept even though they are not yet able to use it, explain it in their own words, or apply it in different situations. Students are not necessarily pretending to understand. Often, they themselves are unaware that their understanding remains shallow.
This creates a significant challenge for teachers. If teachers rely solely on simple questions such as “Do you understand?” the information they receive may be inaccurate. Students may answer “yes” because they feel they followed the explanation, do not want to appear incapable, or simply do not realize which parts they have not yet understood.
Why does the illusion of understanding occur? One reason is that listening to an explanation feels easier than recalling or applying the information later. When a teacher explains something step by step, the material seems simple. Yet when students must solve a problem independently without assistance, they often discover that their understanding is not as strong as they thought.
For example, in mathematics, students may be able to follow a sample problem demonstrated by the teacher on the board. They feel confident because each step appears clear. However, when the numbers or the structure of the problem are slightly changed, they become confused. This indicates that they have memorized a procedure rather than understood the underlying concept.
For this reason, teachers need to be sensitive to signs that students may not truly understand the material. Several indicators commonly appear.

First, students may simply imitate or mimic. They can answer questions when the format is identical to examples they have already seen. However, when a problem is modified even slightly, they struggle to find the solution. They remember the steps but do not understand the reasoning behind them.
Second, body language can be misleading. Some students appear highly attentive, maintaining eye contact with the teacher throughout the lesson, while others diligently write down every word the teacher says. These behaviors do not necessarily indicate understanding. Sometimes students are merely trying to look attentive to avoid being questioned or corrected.
Third, students often provide “safe” answers. When asked a question, they repeat the teacher’s exact words instead of explaining the concept in their own language. If they are asked to provide a new example or justify their answer, they begin to hesitate.
Given this reality, teachers need more effective strategies for checking understanding. One widely recommended approach is formative assessment. Its purpose is not to assign grades but to obtain an accurate picture of students’ understanding during the learning process.
One simple yet highly effective technique is the exit ticket. Before leaving the classroom, students answer a brief question on a piece of paper or through a digital platform. The question should not only ask what they learned but also reveal the difficulties they encountered.
For example, a teacher might ask, “Which part of today’s lesson is still confusing?” or “What was the most difficult concept for you to understand today?” Such responses often provide valuable information that may not emerge during classroom discussions.
Another useful technique is the misconception check. In this method, the teacher intentionally presents a logically incorrect statement and asks students to identify and correct it.
For instance, a mathematics teacher might say, “If a number is multiplied by zero, the result is the number itself.” Students are then asked whether the statement is true or false and to explain their reasoning. This helps teachers determine whether students truly understand the concept or have simply memorized a rule.
The advantage of this method is that it encourages critical thinking. Students do not merely search for the correct answer; they also learn to identify errors and justify their reasoning logically. Such skills are essential in twenty-first-century education, which emphasizes higher-order thinking abilities.
Teachers can also ask students to explain concepts in their own words. If a student can describe the material using simple language and provide new examples, their understanding is likely strong. On the other hand, if they merely repeat textbook definitions or the teacher’s exact words, their understanding may still be superficial.
It is equally important to create a psychologically safe classroom environment. Many students hesitate to admit that they do not understand because they fear being perceived as less intelligent. As a result, they remain silent or pretend to understand. Teachers can change this culture by demonstrating that confusion is a normal part of learning.
When students feel safe enough to say, “I don’t understand yet,” teachers gain an opportunity to support them before misconceptions become deeply rooted. In the long term, this fosters a more honest and healthy learning culture.
Educational research also supports the importance of regularly checking for understanding. Education expert Robert Marzano, in The Art and Science of Teaching, emphasizes that checking for understanding is one of the most important strategies for monitoring student progress. Douglas Fisher and Nancy Frey, in their book Checking for Understanding, explain that teachers must actively seek evidence of understanding rather than assume students understand simply because they appear attentive.
In addition, the Visible Thinking Routines approach developed by Harvard Graduate School of Education highlights the importance of making students’ thinking visible. When teachers can observe how students think, they gain insight not only into the answers students provide but also into the reasoning processes behind those answers.
Ultimately, successful teaching is not measured by how clearly a teacher explains but by how deeply students understand. Nodding heads, focused attention, or the response “I understand” are not always reliable indicators that learning has taken place. Teachers must seek stronger evidence through reflective questioning, discussion, formative assessment, and other strategies that reveal students’ thinking processes.
A great teacher is not merely a transmitter of information but an explorer of students’ minds. Such a teacher does not stop when the explanation ends but continues to ensure that knowledge genuinely takes root within every learner. In this way, learning is not only perceived as successful in the classroom but is demonstrated through deep understanding and students’ ability to apply what they have learned in real-life situations.
