You open your books, pile your notes on the desk, and try to understand as much material as possible in a very short amount of time. Surprisingly, the night before the exam, you may feel like you have mastered everything. But a few days later, much of the material starts to fade from your memory.

This kind of study habit is known as cramming, which means studying a large amount of material all at once within a relatively short period of time. This method can help someone remember a lot of information temporarily, but that information tends to be forgotten more easily. In contrast, there is a learning strategy called distributed practice, which involves studying for shorter periods of time but doing so regularly and repeatedly.

So, which is actually more effective: studying a lot at once or studying a little at a time but more often?

Cramming is easy to do because the results feel immediate. For example, imagine a student who has a math exam the next morning. Because they have not studied beforehand, they spend five or six hours that night reading the textbook, memorizing formulas, and solving problems.

The next day, the student may be able to answer quite a few questions because the information they have just learned is still fresh in their memory. This is what makes cramming feel effective.

The problem appears when that information is not used or reviewed again. Much of the material studied in a rush is not truly understood in depth. As a result, once the exam is over, the information gradually disappears from memory.

Studying a large amount of material at once can indeed help someone memorize a lot of information in a short period of time. However, that information is more easily forgotten because it tends to remain only in short-term memory.

Cramming does not mean that it is completely useless. In certain situations, such as when an exam is approaching very soon, intensive studying can still be helpful. However, if the goal is to understand concepts and remember them for a long time, relying solely on cramming is not an ideal strategy.

Unlike cramming, distributed practice divides the learning process into several shorter sessions that are spread out over time.

Instead of studying for three hours all at once on Sunday, for example, a student could study for 30 minutes every day from Monday to Saturday. The total amount of study time may be almost the same, but the time is distributed across several sessions.

The brain needs time to process information. By studying in shorter sessions, for example around 25–30 minutes a day, the brain has an opportunity to consolidate memories. The information that has been learned is then more likely to become part of long-term memory and contribute to a deeper understanding of the concepts.

This is why studying does not always have to take a long time. What matters more is consistency and repetition.

Imagine a child who is learning English. They want to master 50 new vocabulary words. With cramming, they might try to memorize all 50 words in one night. The next day, they may still remember most of them. But a week later, many of those words may have been forgotten.

With distributed practice, the child could learn around 8–10 words each day. On the following day, they review the previous words while adding new ones. In this way, the learning process does not simply introduce new information but also gives the brain opportunities to retrieve that information.

Learning is not simply about putting information into the brain. For information to be used over the long term, the brain needs to process it, connect it with existing knowledge, and strengthen it through repeated retrieval.

When we learn something and then take a break, the brain has an opportunity to process the newly acquired information. When we return to it some time later, we give the brain another opportunity to activate that information.

This makes learning more than simple memorization. We begin to build connections between new information and the knowledge we already have.

Therefore, studying for 25 minutes today, then reviewing the material tomorrow and again over the following days, can be more beneficial than forcing yourself to study for hours in a single night.

It Is Not About Studying Less

There is a common misconception that distributed practice means spending less time studying. In reality, the main idea is not simply how much time we spend studying, but how that time is distributed.

Someone who studies for 30 minutes every day for six days still spends a total of three hours studying. The difference is that those three hours are not spent in one long session.

Dividing study time in this way can also make learning feel easier. Children do not have to face a huge pile of material that feels overwhelming. Instead, they only need to complete one small section at a time.

This is especially important for children because studying for too long can cause attention to decrease and lead to fatigue. With shorter sessions, children have opportunities to rest and return to learning when their minds are ready again.

Distributed practice can actually be applied in very simple ways. Parents and teachers do not need to create complicated learning programs.

For example, if a child is learning mathematics, the first day can be used to understand a concept and solve a few basic problems. The next day, the child can solve new problems while reviewing some of the previous ones. A few days later, they can test themselves again without looking at their notes.

The same approach can be applied to language, science, history, and even skills such as playing music or drawing.

The key is to create gaps between learning sessions and review the material at regular intervals.

Parents can also help by changing the way children think about studying. Children do not need to believe that studying for hours is the only way to take learning seriously. Instead, they can learn that studying for 20–30 minutes consistently is also meaningful progress.

Small Steps, Lasting Learning

In the end, the question, “Is it better to study a little at a time or a lot all at once?” has a fairly clear answer if our goal is long-term learning.

Cramming can be useful for short-term needs, but distributed practice is better suited to building understanding and memories that last longer.

Studying a little at a time but more often gives the brain opportunities to process information, retrieve it, and consolidate it into long-term memory.

So, instead of waiting until an exam is just around the corner and then studying all night, why not start little by little today?

You do not have to start with an hour. Begin with 20–30 minutes. Choose one small topic, study it with focus, and then return to it the next day.

Because when it comes to learning, small progress made consistently is often more powerful than a great effort made only once in a while.

Have you ever started studying only when an exam was just one or two days away?
