Reading may feel relatively easy. When watching movies or listening to songs, we may even understand many words. But as soon as we have to speak, everything suddenly seems to disappear.

Words that we have actually learned become difficult to remember. Simple sentences suddenly feel complicated. We know what we want to say, but we do not know how to say it. Eventually, we find ourselves saying, “I actually understand it, but when I’m asked to speak, my mind just goes blank.”

This phenomenon is very common in language learning. The problem is not always a lack of vocabulary or poor understanding of grammar. One reason is that understanding a language and producing a language are two different skills.

When reading or listening, we mainly engage in a process of recognition: recognizing and understanding incoming information. When speaking, on the other hand, we have to engage in retrieval: retrieving information from memory and using it quickly.

This is why someone can have a large vocabulary that they understand but still struggle to use those words in conversation.

Why Does Speaking Feel So Difficult?

Speaking is actually quite a complex task for the brain. In a very short amount of time, we have to decide what we want to say, choose the right words, organize the sentence structure, and then turn those words into speech with appropriate pronunciation and intonation.

Imagine someone wants to say in English:

“I have never visited Korea before.”

They first have to think about the idea they want to express, retrieve words such as never, visit, Korea, and before, determine the sentence structure, and then pronounce the sentence fluently enough.

For learners who are still at an early stage or are not used to speaking, all of these processes can feel overwhelming. This is especially true when they feel like they are being tested.

That is why the greater the pressure to speak “correctly,” the easier it can be to lose access to words or structures that we have actually learned.

The problem is not necessarily that the brain does not know the answer, but that access to that knowledge is not yet fast or automatic enough.

This is one of the most common complaints among language learners.

Someone may already know hundreds or even thousands of words from books, videos, songs, movies, or language-learning apps. However, much of this vocabulary may still belong to what is often called passive vocabulary or receptive vocabulary.

This means we can recognize a word when we hear or read it, but we may not be able to produce it ourselves when we need it.

For example, an English learner may know the word exhausted. When reading the sentence “She was exhausted after work,” they understand that exhausted means extremely tired.

However, when speaking and trying to say, “I’m very tired today,” the word that comes to mind may simply be tired because it is easier to retrieve.

There is nothing wrong with this. In fact, it shows that vocabulary exists at different levels of accessibility and automaticity.

Therefore, simply learning more and more vocabulary does not necessarily make speaking more fluent. What is also important is training ourselves to actively retrieve that vocabulary.

Use Language Journaling

One simple way to develop this ability is through language journaling.

Writing a journal in the language we are learning gives the brain an opportunity to retrieve information that was previously only recognized passively.

For example, instead of simply memorizing the words busy, appointment, tired, and prepare, try writing:

“Today I was very busy. I had an appointment in the afternoon, so I had to prepare everything in the morning.”

When writing, we are not simply looking at words. We have to think about how those words are used in context.

However, journaling should not stop at writing. After finishing, read what you have written aloud.

This is where writing practice begins to connect with speaking.

Writing gives us time to organize our thoughts and construct sentences more calmly. Once the sentence structure has been formed, we can train our brains to say it aloud.

In other words, journaling can serve as a kind of bridge between thinking and speaking.

Balance Fluency and Accuracy

There are also learners who are actually quite confident when speaking. They actively try to use the language they are learning but rarely evaluate their performance.

As a result, the same mistakes may appear again and again.

In language learning, mistakes are not something we should be afraid of. However, mistakes that are repeatedly made without attention or correction can become habits that are harder to change.

That is why speaking requires a balance between fluency and accuracy.

We need opportunities to speak without constantly stopping ourselves to check every grammar rule. At the same time, we also need dedicated time to evaluate and correct our mistakes.

One practical method is self-correction after speaking.

For example, record yourself speaking for one or two minutes about your daily activities. When you finish, listen to the recording again. Notice the parts that sound awkward or the words that were difficult to retrieve.

Then check them using a dictionary, grammar book, language-learning app, or an AI tool.

This way, we are not simply “speaking.” We are also learning from the speaking process itself.

Start with Small Retrieval Practice

Another common mistake is trying to force ourselves into long conversations immediately.

In reality, speaking can be trained gradually.

Start with small retrieval exercises. Take one word and create several sentences with it. Then choose a simple topic, such as food, family, work, school, or your activities today.

Try speaking for 30 seconds. Once you become more comfortable, increase it to one minute, then two minutes.

Exercises like these help improve our ability to retrieve words and sentence structures without creating too much cognitive pressure.

We can also use the “look–cover–say” technique.

Read a sentence. Cover the sentence. Then try to say it again without looking at the text. After that, compare your version with the original sentence.

This simple exercise trains active recall, which is the ability to retrieve information from memory without immediately looking at the answer.

Learn Phrases, Not Just Individual Words

Speaking can also become easier if we do not always memorize language as individual words.

Instead of simply memorizing agree, for example, learn several common patterns:

“I agree with you.”

“I completely agree.”

“I’m not sure I agree with that.”

The same principle can be applied to English, Korean, Japanese, or any other language. Learn phrases and patterns that commonly appear together.

This allows the brain to avoid constructing every sentence from scratch. Instead, we have several “chunks” of language that can be reused and adapted to different situations.

This is one reason why learning through dialogues, stories, podcasts, or everyday conversations can help develop speaking skills. We encounter language in a more complete and contextual form.

Speaking Is a Skill That Needs Practice

Ultimately, difficulty with speaking does not always mean that someone is not intelligent, not hardworking, or has not memorized enough.

Someone can have extensive knowledge of a language and still need time to turn that knowledge into an automatic skill.

The key is to change the learning process from simply receiving language to regularly retrieving, constructing, saying, and evaluating language.

Reading and listening are still important because they provide input. However, if the ultimate goal is to speak, we also need to give our brains opportunities to produce output.

Start with something simple.

Write a short journal every day. Reuse the vocabulary you have recently learned. Read your writing aloud. Record your voice. Listen to it again. Identify the mistakes you make most often. Correct a few of them, and then try to use the corrected forms in your next conversation.

Do not wait until you feel “good enough” to start speaking.

In fact, speaking itself helps turn language knowledge into a skill that can be used in real life.

So, when you find yourself going blank while speaking again, do not immediately think, “I can’t speak this language.”

Maybe you actually already know the answer—your brain is simply learning how to find the fastest way to retrieve it.

Many people experience the same thing when learning a foreign language.
