Children have just come in from outside, finished playing, talked with their friends, run around, joked, or taken part in an energetic activity. Then, when the teacher starts teaching, they are expected to immediately sit quietly, listen, concentrate, and be ready to receive new information.

However, a child’s body and brain cannot always shift from an active state to a learning state within a matter of seconds.

This is why Silent Time, or a quiet period, can be an interesting and simple routine to introduce in the classroom. Children are given around 10 minutes before and after certain activities to pause, calm themselves, and enjoy a quieter atmosphere.

Silent Time does not mean forcing children to sit silently and do nothing. Its purpose is to create a pause that gives their bodies, minds, and attention an opportunity to transition.

Children naturally have a lot of energy and a strong need to move. After playing or participating in an enjoyable activity, their mood and energy may still carry over into the classroom. If the teacher immediately gives academic instructions, some children may still be thinking about the previous game, talking to their friends, or simply not yet realize that learning time has begun.

Silent Time can serve as a bridge.

For a few minutes, children do not have to immediately solve problems or receive new material. They can sit quietly, adjust their posture, take slow breaths, observe their surroundings, or simply enjoy the silence.

This makes the transition from one activity to another feel less sudden.

The same applies after activities that require a lot of energy. After sports, group games, art activities, or other lively classroom activities, children may need some time to return to a calmer state before moving on to the next activity.

Learning requires attention. However, attention does not always appear simply because a teacher asks children to focus.

Imagine someone running and then suddenly being asked to sit still and read a book that requires deep concentration. Their body may still be in an active state. Children can experience something similar.

Silent Time gives the body and mind an opportunity to make that transition gradually.

Ten minutes may seem simple, but when practiced consistently, it can become a signal that an activity is about to begin or has just ended. Over time, Silent Time can become a familiar classroom ritual.

Children begin to understand that when the classroom becomes quiet, it is time to calm down and prepare their attention.

One important benefit of Silent Time is that it gives children an opportunity to develop self-regulation.

Self-regulation does not mean that children must always be quiet or still. It is about learning to recognize their own condition and manage their responses according to the situation.

Children learn that there is a time to play, talk, move, and express themselves. But there is also a time to pause, listen, observe, and focus.

During Silent Time, children can practice resisting the urge to talk or disturb their friends for a few minutes. They can also learn to recognize whether their bodies are still too active, tired, restless, or beginning to feel calm.

These skills are not only useful in the classroom. The ability to regulate oneself can also help children deal with various situations in everyday life.

Being a good listener is also an important part of learning.

A child who is physically sitting in their chair is not necessarily mentally ready to listen. Their attention may still be focused on something that happened earlier.

Silent Time can provide an opportunity to reduce distractions before the teacher begins speaking.

After a few minutes of quiet, the teacher can give a simple instruction such as, “Now, let’s begin our lesson.”

The instruction can feel more meaningful because the children have already been given time to make the transition.

It is important to understand that Silent Time is not a form of punishment.

Teachers should not use silence as a way to punish children for being noisy. Otherwise, children may begin to associate being quiet with something negative.

Instead, Silent Time should be introduced as a time to take a break from noise and prepare themselves.

The activity can also be adjusted according to the children’s age. Younger children may simply sit quietly while paying attention to their breathing or observing objects around them. Older children can be encouraged to reflect briefly on how they feel that day.

Not every child will immediately be able to sit quietly for 10 minutes. Therefore, the duration can be adjusted. If 10 minutes feels too long, teachers can start with one to three minutes and gradually increase the time.

Silent Time can also be an entry point for introducing mindfulness to children.

Mindfulness does not always have to take the form of formal meditation. Children can simply be invited to pay attention to their breathing for a few moments, notice how their bodies feel in their chairs, listen to the sounds around them, or become aware of their emotions.

A teacher might say, “Notice your breathing. You don’t have to change it. Just pay attention to it.”

Simple instructions like this can help children learn that they do not always have to react to every thought, sound, or impulse that arises.

They can learn to pause before responding.

When practiced consistently, Silent Time can become more than an individual activity. It can help shape the culture of the classroom.

Children learn that a classroom has a rhythm. There is a time to be active and a time to be calm. There is a time to talk and a time to listen.

Teachers may also find that they do not need to constantly say, “Don’t be noisy!” or “Be quiet!”

Instead, quietness becomes part of a routine that everyone understands.

For example, after recess, children can enter the classroom, put away their belongings, sit in their places, and then spend a few minutes in Silent Time. After that, the lesson begins.

A routine like this can make the beginning of a lesson feel more structured.

In addition to helping with transitions, Silent Time can also introduce simple reflection.

Children can be encouraged to ask themselves: “How am I feeling today?” “Is my body tired?” “What made me happy?” or “What would I like to do better today?”

They do not always have to answer these questions aloud. Simply becoming aware of their feelings without having to share them with others can already be a meaningful reflective experience.

In this way, Silent Time is not simply “time to be quiet.” It is an opportunity for children to pause, become aware, and prepare themselves.

The success of Silent Time is not determined solely by whether children can remain quiet for 10 minutes.

What matters more is consistency and the purpose behind the practice.

Teachers can choose a duration that suits the needs and conditions of their classroom. Most importantly, children should understand that Silent Time is part of a routine designed to help them transition from one activity to another.

Ultimately, education is not only about how much academic material we can give children. It is also about helping them understand themselves, manage their attention, regulate their responses, and recognize when it is time to move and when it is time to pause.

Ten minutes of silence may seem like a small thing. But for a child, those ten minutes can become a space to breathe, calm the body, gather their attention, and prepare to learn again.

Because sometimes, before children are ready to learn, they first need the opportunity to pause and be fully present in the classroom.

Have you ever noticed what happens in a classroom a few minutes before a lesson begins?
