In many traditional school systems, memorization is considered an effective way to store information in the short term and prepare students for exams. However, with changing times and evolving educational methods, many are beginning to question its relevance and effectiveness, especially for today’s generation of children who grow up in a digital and fast-paced environment.

The memorization method, or rote learning, involves repeating information until it is recorded in memory. This technique is commonly used in memorizing mathematical formulas, foreign language vocabulary, historical dates, and scientific concepts that require memorization. However, memorization is often criticized for emphasizing memory over deep understanding. This causes students to be able to recall information but struggle to apply it in different contexts.

One of the main weaknesses of the memorization method is the lack of development in critical thinking skills. Today’s generation lives in an era of information that not only relies on memory but also on understanding, creativity, and analytical skills. Children today are more accustomed to interactive learning approaches, such as educational videos, gamification, and project-based exploration. When the memorization method is rigidly applied, children may lose interest in learning because they find the process boring and irrelevant to their daily lives.

Nevertheless, memorization still has benefits in some aspects. It can improve short-term memory capacity and train the brain to recall information quickly. In certain fields such as medicine, law, and science, memorization remains an essential part of the learning process. The challenge is how to make this method more engaging and relevant for today’s generation.

A more effective approach than pure memorization is concept-based understanding. In this method, students not only memorize facts but also understand how and why the information is important. For example, in history lessons, instead of merely memorizing dates and events, students can be encouraged to analyze the impact of an event on the future or find connections between that event and the current world.

Another more effective method is mnemonic techniques, where information is associated with images, stories, or patterns that are easier to remember. An example is using acronyms to recall long lists or creating short songs to help remember specific concepts. This technique is more appealing to children as it involves creativity and stronger associations in the brain.

Additionally, experiential and exploratory learning approaches have also proven to be more effective than mere memorization. For example, in science education, children can be encouraged to conduct direct experiments rather than just reading theories in books. Similarly, in language learning, methods such as role-playing or simulating real-life situations are more helpful in building understanding and practical skills than just memorizing vocabulary.

In today’s digital world, technology can also be leveraged to improve memory-based learning methods. Educational applications that use spaced repetition techniques have been proven effective in helping retain information in the long term. This system ensures that learned information is repeated at specific intervals so that it remains stored in memory without excessive memorization.

Discussion-based and collaborative learning methods are also more effective than solitary memorization. Through group discussions, students can share their understanding and listen to different perspectives, which strengthens their comprehension of a subject. When they have to explain something back to their peers, it helps them internalize information better than simply memorizing it without understanding its meaning.

Among all the available methods, it is crucial for educators to adapt their approach to the learning styles of children. Each individual has a different way of learning; some are more effective with memorization, while others grasp concepts better through visuals, kinesthetic activities, or direct experiences. Therefore, a flexible and varied method will be more effective than relying solely on pure memorization.

In conclusion, the memorization method still has a place in education but can no longer be the only technique used in teaching today’s generation of children. With advancing technology and the increasing complexity of 21st-century skills, more interactive, experiential-based, and in-depth understanding approaches are better choices. Therefore, educators should combine memorization techniques with more modern strategies to make learning more effective, relevant, and engaging for today’s children.

The memorization learning method has long been used in education.
