When a child can read sentences fluently or count from one to one hundred, we often feel that the foundations of learning have been successfully established. However, the ability to read and calculate does not necessarily mean that children truly understand what they read or can use numbers effectively in everyday life.

This is the essence of literacy and numeracy. They are not merely technical skills involving letters and numbers; rather, they are the abilities to understand, interpret, and use information to make sound decisions in real-life situations.

Imagine someone reading the ingredients listed on a medicine label. They may be able to pronounce every word correctly, including complex chemical names and artificial sweeteners. But do they understand what that information means? Do they know its effects on health or why the medicine is used? Not necessarily.

The same thing happens with children. They may be able to read a sentence fluently, yet fail to understand its meaning. They can pronounce words one after another without truly grasping the message the text is trying to convey. As a result, reading becomes a mechanical activity rather than a meaningful process of understanding.

This phenomenon is often referred to as the illusion of understanding. From the outside, it appears that children can read, but in reality, they do not fully comprehend what they are reading. This is why reading skills must develop into the ability to understand and interpret information.

A similar situation occurs with numeracy. Many children can recite numbers in sequence or perform simple arithmetic operations. However, when they are required to use numbers to make decisions, they often struggle.

For example, imagine a shopping situation involving two packages of detergent. The first package contains 900 grams and costs Rp25,000, while the second contains 500 grams and is discounted from Rp18,000 to Rp16,000. A child may be able to read all the numbers correctly. But can they determine which option offers better value? Do they understand the relationship between quantity and price?

This is where numeracy comes into play. Numeracy is not merely about performing calculations; it is about understanding the meaning behind numbers and using quantitative information to make reasonable decisions.

In everyday life, challenges like these are everywhere. Reading clocks, estimating travel time, understanding discounts, interpreting graphs, checking transportation schedules, or comparing product prices all require numeracy skills. Without those skills, numbers remain symbols that are difficult to use effectively.

This issue is not merely theoretical. Data released by the World Bank in 2022 indicated that approximately 53 percent of Indonesian students in the upper grades of elementary school struggled to understand simple texts. This figure suggests that many children can technically read but are not yet able to comprehend what they read effectively.

These findings serve as a reminder that education must not stop at recognizing letters and numbers. The true goal of education is to help children understand information, think critically, and apply knowledge to solve problems.

Imagine a child looking at a map. They may know that blue represents water and that certain lines indicate rivers. However, understanding a map requires more than recognizing symbols.

Children need to understand the relationships between those symbols. They must determine the direction of a river, estimate distances, identify locations, and choose the most effective route. In other words, they must be able to transform available information into meaningful understanding.

This process demonstrates that literacy and numeracy always involve several stages. First, a person receives information. Second, they understand that information. Third, they connect it to a relevant context. Finally, they use that understanding to make decisions or take action.

These are precisely the skills required in modern life. In today’s digital era, information is available almost without limits. Every day, people are exposed to news, messages, articles, videos, advertisements, and countless other forms of information. However, access to information alone does not automatically make someone more knowledgeable.

In fact, in the midst of this information overload, literacy skills become even more important. People must be able to distinguish accurate information from false information, understand context, and critically evaluate sources. Without these abilities, they can easily fall victim to hoaxes, misinformation, and poor decision-making.

The same applies to numeracy. The modern world is filled with data and statistics. Weather reports, sports statistics, survey results, economic graphs, and health information all require the ability to interpret and understand numbers.

Therefore, literacy and numeracy are ultimately more than academic skills. They are life skills. These abilities help people make better decisions in education, employment, health, and financial matters.

As teachers and parents, we play an essential role in developing these abilities. The good news is that literacy and numeracy do not have to be taught only through textbooks or worksheets.

Both can be developed through simple everyday activities. Parents can discuss stories that children have read, ask for their opinions, or encourage them to explain the content in their own words. Such activities help children build understanding rather than simply practice reading.

Numeracy can also be strengthened through daily experiences such as cooking, shopping, measuring objects, estimating time, or comparing prices. When children are encouraged to think about numbers in real-world contexts, they learn that mathematics is not just a school subject but a tool for understanding the world.

Teachers can also create more meaningful learning experiences by connecting classroom lessons to real-life situations. When students see the practical value of what they are learning, their motivation and understanding increase.

However, improving literacy and numeracy cannot be the responsibility of teachers and schools alone. It is a shared responsibility. Families, communities, educational institutions, and governments must work together to create environments that support learning.

When children have access to quality reading materials, opportunities for discussion, experiences that encourage problem-solving, and environments that value learning, their literacy and numeracy skills can develop naturally.

Ultimately, literacy and numeracy are not simply the abilities to read words or recognize numbers. They are the foundations that enable people to understand the world, make wise decisions, and participate actively in society.

If we want to prepare a generation capable of facing future challenges, our focus cannot be limited to teaching children how to read and calculate. More importantly, we must ensure that every child can understand what they read, interpret what they see, and use information effectively to make sound decisions.

Because in an increasingly complex world, recognizing letters and numbers is only the beginning. What truly shapes the future is the ability to understand the meaning behind them.

Many people assume that the ability to read and calculate is a sign that a child is ready to face educational challenges.
